[1] When Bishwasada left one day to work in the distant state of Punjab, he hoped to better support his wife and two children. Instead, the family suffered a wrenching tragedy. During his absence, a neighborhood couple approached his wife and offered to provide education for their 6-year-old son Mukesh and a monthly " scholarship " of $ 6 . The couple paid one month's money in advance and took Mukesh away. Bishwasada returned home eight weeks later and insisted on visiting his son's school. The couple had vanished ! [2] For the next two years, Bishwasada conducted a village-to-village hunt for his missing son. Having to pay several people who claimed, falsely, to have information, he sold his cattle and mortgaged half his land to fund the search. Finally, Bishwasada gave up, convinced his son was dead. [3] Save the Childhood Movement, an anti-child-labor group, reports that few children like Mukesh, sold into the hands of factory owners, were rescued. However the S.C.M can only act on the strength of a formal complaint from a child's parent and such complaints are rare. [4] Mukesh was to be among the lucky ones. In 1995, he was located in a village called Hindchandpur. He was working in a house outfitted with carpet looms. Late last month, the group received official permission to raid the building. A party of 11, including two policemen, a local official and Mukesh's father, arrived at dusk to find the mud-house deserted. Neighbors testified that no child had ever worked the looms and that the owner was away on business . [5] As the disappointed group prepared to leave, a villager slipped them a note saying that several children were hidden in the darkened surrounding fields. After some searching, the group found nine young boys. One was Mukesh, now 12 . " I was always hungry and tired, " he said of his years of captivity .
