Exercice n°1 : Il s'agit de remplir les trous par l'un des trois mots donnés (voir la marge).
Il importe de lire attentivement le paragraphe sans prêter attention aux solutions proposées. De quoi s'agit-il au juste ?
Il s'agit d'une lettre écrite par Kathy, David et John à leurs parents, dans laquelle ils évoquent leurs vacances. Une fois le message compris, relisez la lettre une deuxième et troisième fois (et autant de fois que possible, et concentrez vous sur les solutions proposées en faisant très attention à votre choix. Il faudrait se rappeler qu'une seule réponse est possible. C'est un exercice de langue (surtout de grammaire) très accessible si l'on fait appel à ses connaissances de base - Prenons quelques exemples = concernant le "trou n°2" "we have arrived ………" (Mots proposés "safe" qui est un adjectif, "safety" qui est un nom et enfin "safely" qui est un adverbe. La réponse est claire et nette => vu le verbe "we arrived", c'est la 3ème proposition (l'adverbe "safely") qu'il faut choisir.
"Trou 6" : "so far, "I ……………… " (là aussi partant du fait qu'après "so far", il faudrait obligatoirement utiliser le "présent perfect") le choix est très facile (et surtout automatique) à faire.
Exercices 2, 3 et 4
Il s'agit plus ou moins du même type d'exercice (à trous) mais le nombre de trous coincide exactement avec le nombre de mots proposés (ex 2 et 4).
Exercice n°3
Consiste à trouver les mots dérivés des mots donnés (ex: "Colony donne "Colonists" à cause de la présence de "few" mais aussi en raison du contexte (ex themselves and their families …. For those who …..)
Encore une fois, faites appel à vos connaissances linguistiques (grammaticales et lexicales) pour répondre correctement à ces 3 exercices - Faites aussi attention à l'orthographe de certains mots (le nom qui vient de "to maintain" est "maintenance").

2. Use the words in the box to complete the following paragraph.

        Success is certainly what most people dream of achieving. It implies being rich and famous. But fame can cause a person lots of problems as it happens to singers and comedians. They suffer from a lack of privacy. They need bodyguards to protect them.
The constant pressure on them can lead to the breakup of their marriages.
That's possibly why I'm not so ambitious  . I like to lead a peaceful life. Reaching the top of the ladder is none of my concern.

3. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the bracketed words.

   Relatively few (colony) colonists could finance the (cost) costs of passage for themselves and their families and of making a start in the new land. For those who could not, the expenses of transportation and ( maintain ) maintenance were paid by colonizing agencies. In return, the settlers agreed to work for the agencies as contract (labour) labourers / labour. Although most of them fulfilled their obligations (faithful) faithfully, some ran away from their (employ) employers.

4. Fill in the blanks with the right words from the box to get a coherent paragraph.

Childless couples often try to adopt a child. Yet, legal adoption is a difficult process, as / for it involves going through several steps. One of the first is to look for a child. Some couples prefer a baby that looks like them but others don't worry about that.
