Three weeks ago, Dr. Robert Huse's pediatrics practrice in Suburbian Dallas was thriving. His patient list numbered close to 4,000 children. The parents loved him and his income was about $ 150,000 a year. This week, Huse is clearing out his office in Mesquite, Texas, unsure whether he will be able to practise pediatrics again. "I want him hanged, " said a parent of two children treated by Huse. " I really don't care if it ruins his practice, I don't want him to go somewhere else to treat other little babies".

    Huse has not been accused of malpractice or child abuse. In fact, many of the parents who have abruptly cancelled appointments in recent weeks, continue to praise the forty-four-year old physician's competence and dedication, but those qualities are no match for the fear of AIDS. When the Mesquite News revealed that the pediatrician had tested positive for the AIDS antibody, two years ago, the doctor's transformation from respected citizen to pariah was swift. For his part, Huse feels his right to privacy was violated and is suing the newspaper for revealing the test results.

    After the News article appeared, Huse practice dropped to six patients a day, about 75 percent fewer than a month ago. He had little choice to close up shop.

    Jeff Kerber, the Mesquite News reporter who pursued and wrote the story after receiving a tip, says he was aware of the revelation's potential impact. "We knew that his practice would probably be wiped out", says Kerber, "but the public health concern is more important and parents really have a right to know all the facts about their physicians". Whether that right to know overrides Huse's right to privacy is now up to the courts to decide. Huse is not sure what he'll do after he leaves Mesquite this week. "One possibility", he says "is to care for AIDS patients - adults as well as children".
